Become part of a network that connects people who are interested in rural mental health research across Canada. Membership offers opportunities to engage in research, education, and community-focused projects. 

    • Undergraduate and Graduate Students looking to expand their learning and contribute to rural mental health initiatives. 

    • Post-Doctoral Fellows seeking collaboration and support for their research. 

    • Community and Professional Affiliates working with mental illness. 

    • Faculty Affiliates, including full-time, part-time, or Emeritus, at Brandon University or other institutions actively conducting research on rural mental health.

    • Networking Opportunities: Connect with peers, experts, and community partners in the field. 

    • Project Support: Access advice and support with planning, carrying out, and sharing the results of research. 

    • Engagement Platforms: Present your findings at seminars, post your results on our website, share on our YouTube channel, and attend other events.

    •  Active Participation: Join Centre events, contribute to committees, and engage in seminars. 

    • Annual Reporting: Share a summary of your research and activities to be included in the Centre’s Annual Report. 

  • Membership includes access to and participation in the extended network of the Centre as well as direct and in-kind administrative, communications and support for research, education, and community engagement initiatives and activities.

  • All members are expected to actively participate in Centre activities on a regular basis. These may include such activities as contributing to committee work, presenting at seminars, and attending Centre events. Members are responsible for submitting notification of their research and community activities in relation to rural mental health, which will be included in Annual Report for the Centre.

  • All membership in the Centre is by invitation or application. The categories for membership include two academic stream affiliates, two student stream affiliates, and one community stream affiliate. The terms of reference of membership are listed in the following chart. Following the chart is the application form.

The Centre, housed in the Faculty of Health Studies, serves as a point of contact and network for researchers, students, community members, professionals, educators and a broad range of people who live with, and support people living with, mental health problems.

  • CRITERIA

    • Full-time, part-time or Emeritus faculty members at Brandon University or another University who are engaged in productive scholarly research on rural mental health.

    • Research Affiliates will normally hold a doctoral degree but may also possess a Master’s degree and have several years of research experience.

    • There is no salary or stipend associated with this appointment.

    TERM

    • Membership for faculty Research Affiliates is by invitation or application for a three-year (renewable) term.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Research Affiliates will be expected to contribute to the intellectual and community life of the Centre.

    • Members are expected to:

      • Share seminars in relation to rural mental health and create a means of access for others to attend the seminar.

      • Contribute to committees or interest groups affiliated with the CCSRMH.

      • Submit notification of any new research funding, honors, awards, distinctions, publications, presentations and innovative knowledge products which will be incorporated in the CCSRMH annual report.

    PROCESS

    • Submit application along with CV and letter from employer

    • Application will be reviewed by the Executive Committee

    • Applicant will be notified re: success of application within 1 month

  • CRITERIA

    • Include recent PhD graduates who are engaged in productive scholarly research on rural mental health and wellness.

    TERM

    • PhD graduates can apply to be associated with the Centre for a temporary, limited and non-renewable term (normally 1 or 2 years), to be determined by the Executive Committee and availability of funding.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Postdoctoral Fellows are expected to participate in the intellectual and community life of the Centre and may be asked to offer a lecture(s), seminar(s) or workshop(s) at the Centre about their work.

    PROCESS

    • Submit application along with CV and letter from employer

    • Application will be reviewed by the Executive Committee

    • Applicant will be notified re: success of application within 1 month

  • CRITERIA

    • Include graduate students at Brandon University who are formally enrolled in a graduate program and doing research related to rural mental health.

    • There is no salary or stipend associated with this appointment, however, Graduate Student Affiliates may be employed as Research Assistants by Centre members or for Centre projects.

    TERM

    • Membership is by invitation or application for a two-year term.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • May be asked to sit on ad hoc committees as required.

      Application will be reviewed by the Executive Committee

      Applicant will be notified re: success of application within 1 month

  • CRITERIA

    • Includes undergraduate students at Brandon University who are interested in scholarly research on rural mental health and wellness.

    • There is no salary or stipend associated with this appointment, however, Undergraduate Student Affiliates may be employed as Research Assistants by Centre members or for Centre projects.

    TERM

    • Membership is by application for a one-year term (renewable until their status as student ends).

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • May be asked to sit on ad hoc committees as required

    PROCESS

      Application will be reviewed by the Executive Committee

      Applicant will be notified re: success of application within 1 month

  • CRITERIA

    • Includes community members, including health care professionals, advocates, public officials, artists, care workers, educators and retirees, not affiliated with a university but whose activities, work and/or interests are related obviously and substantially to the research of the Centre.

    • There is no salary or stipend associated with this appointment.

    TERM

    • Membership is by invitation or application for a two-year (renewable) term.

    • May be asked to sit on ad hoc committees as required

Brandon University approved the Centre for Critical Studies of Rural Mental Health in 2019. The Centre’s purpose is to accelerate the number of studies on rural and remote mental health and wellness, link research results to people who can use them, and support education and community engagement in relation to mental health.
