Welcome to the Centre for Critical
Studies of Rural Mental Health!
The Centre brings together people who are interested in rural mental health research. We work with rural communities to address mental health challenges and opportunities that are important to them.
Since 2019 we’ve helped identify and answer questions generated with community partners, developed faculty and graduate student research skills, facilitated connections between university researchers and community members, and shared research related to rural mental health. partners on issues that matter.

Our priorities:
Through collaborating with community partners, our team has identified four strategic areas that guide our research activities:
Indigenous mental wellness
Resources/services for mental health issues
Rural work (e.g., agriculture, fishing, and forestry)
and mental healthSubstance use
Our mission:
The Centre promotes innovative, community-connected research and education to inform rural mental health and wellness policies and practices, respond to the issues facing rural people and communities, and develop expertise for understanding and planning for Canada's rural and remote health and wellness.

We work with some incredible partners

We acknowledge that the Brandon University Centre for Critical Studies of Rural Mental Health is located on Treaty 1 and Treaty 2 lands, shared by the Dakota Oyate, Anishinaabeg, and the Red River Métis. Many Indigenous peoples, including the Ininew, Anisininewuk, Denesuline, and Inuit, call Brandon home today. Our work is possible because of the treaties and Indigenous contributions to care for this place. We recognize the impact of colonialism, past and present, on the mental health of Indigenous communities.
